IG will
be a valuable tool in your practice as a language
professional. It will tell you about the latest job
opportunities("JOBS"), the most comprehensive listing of
products and services to improve your job
performance("RESOURCES") and the best deals on "fun things"
that have little to do with your work, but are available just
because IG wants you to enjoy
yourselves(yes, it's called "FUN THINGS")
But the main reason
IG is special is because we are paying
attention to the future of the interpreting and translating
professions. The artifical limits that have kept down
your profits and standard of living are being eliminated - one
by one. This is because the skills that made you a
multi-linguist are needed more and more every day and, in
addition, are marketable in other areas.
THE FIVE
ROOMS
Think of the profession as a
house with five rooms. At present, your career depends
on the available jobs in each of the rooms. They are:
Room B:
Business Room E: Education Room
G: Government & Law Room H:
Health Room L: Leisure &
Culture
Each room represents a segment of
the total employment market. Each has different
requirements, training and career models. And each is
growing independantly, with more job openings and assignments
every day.
Many of you have backgrounds that
fit more neatly into one of the fields - or rooms -
than the others. You can design your profile to
emphasize that particular strength. For instance, if you
have done many oral translations at business conferences -
consecutive or simultaneous - your profile would have those
assignments in boldface, and you would want
your profile in the "B" Room, for Business
Language Professionals.
Similarly, if your have ESL
experience in teaching English as a second language, you might
want your profile found in the "E" Room, for
Language Professionals in Education
If you have qualifications and
experience that fit into two or more rooms - say
both education and literary translation - your profile
can be posted to both the "E" and
"L" rooms. And you can make changes in
them to emphasize your strengths in that particular area.
LOOKING AT THE
FUTURE
As your chosen profession changes
and develops, IG will use this
section to report on the NEW IDEAS that are
developing in each of these five areas. We intend to
report relevant news items, conduct interviews with business
and political leaders and report economic forecasts of the
best employment opportunities in the future. Since
globalization will increase the purchasing power of many
people who have not had it before, international commerce will
also increase to meet the growing demand for goods and
services. Language barriers that blok this commercial
growth will not be tolerated. Multi-linguist
professionals will be needed to ease the flow of commerce and
international trade cooperation.
Be ready for this!
Your skills will be needed. IG will tell your
clients where to find you.
YOUR
VIEWPOINT
This section will also include a
forum for your input. This is very
important. Some "new ideas" are too new, and
take time to become effective. Or else they are simply
bad ideas that should be abandoned. You can
help us, as well as yourselves, by telling us your experiences
in a special forum section.
IG can
only suceed if its membership actively promotes the
perspective of the working professional. It is how you
make yourself an essential part of the company.
